The changing role of designers in the age of AI

AI is not removing the designer; it is expanding the responsibility to decide which problems are worth solving.

Production is faster, selection is harder

Tools can generate dozens of interface, copy and image alternatives in seconds. That abundance does not automatically surface a good idea. The designer's role expands from producing to selecting, directing and establishing measures of quality.

Context remains the most valuable data

A model can combine past patterns powerfully, but the organisation's goals, the user's moment and the consequences of a decision still need to be understood by the team. Research and strategic framing therefore matter more, not less.

A useful test for simplicity: can the user confidently choose the next step without anyone explaining the interface?

The new craft: designing the system

Instead of a single perfect screen, we design rules and feedback loops that produce consistent outcomes. A strong designer shapes not only the output but also data, prompts, controls and the points where human judgement is required.

Let's bring the next good idea to life.
